On the tee: John Deere Classic

Facing media criticism over his decision to skip the British Open, Kenny Perry returns to action this week on the PGA Tour. The John Deere Classic in Illinois usually doesn't attract a stellar cast of characters, but Perry will serve as a suitable stopgap for newshounds. Not only does a cloud of controversy surround him, but he also happens to be the top-ranked player in the field. The veteran pro from Kentucky catapulted up the world rankings after a torrid month of June which saw him collect two victories on tour. Perry's good track record at the TPC Deere Run also gives him hope to join Tiger Woods as the only player with at least three titles in 2008.
